Self-Care Isn’t Selfish: Why Looking After Yourself Matters
In a world where we are often expected to keep going, do more, achieve more and care for everyone around us, self-care can sometimes feel like something we have to earn. But the truth is, looking after yourself isn’t selfish — it is essential.
Self-care is not about being indulgent or putting yourself above others. It is about recognising that your own wellbeing matters too. When we constantly give without taking time to restore ourselves, we can become exhausted, overwhelmed and disconnected from the things that bring us joy and balance.
As a nurse and yoga teacher, I have seen first-hand how easy it is for people to prioritise everyone else before themselves. Parents, healthcare professionals and busy working adults often carry huge responsibilities while ignoring their own needs. But we cannot pour from an empty cup.
Self-care can be simple. It might be taking a few minutes to breathe deeply, stepping outside into nature, moving your body, practising yoga, resting without guilt, journalling, connecting with others or simply allowing yourself a moment of stillness.
Yoga and mindfulness offer powerful tools to support self-care. Through movement, breathwork and relaxation practices such as Yoga Nidra, we can help calm the nervous system, reduce stress and create space to reconnect with ourselves.
Self-care is not a luxury reserved for when everything else is done — because often, everything else is never truly finished. It is a foundation that helps us show up more fully in our relationships, our work and our everyday lives.
Taking care of yourself teaches those around you that their wellbeing matters too. It shows our children, our colleagues and our loved ones that rest, boundaries and balance are important parts of being human.
So today, ask yourself:
What is one small thing I can do to support my own wellbeing?
It doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes the smallest moments of kindness towards ourselves can create the biggest changes.
At Yoga Nurse 4 Wellbeing, I offer yoga, Yoga Nidra, breathwork, mindfulness and wellbeing sessions designed to help you slow down, reconnect and create more balance in your life.
Because self-care isn’t selfish — it’s how we sustain ourselves.
